to Compete in PRO/Am NRC Race for the Benefit of Area
Charities
West Warwick, R.I. – Cox Communications
today announced that an additional six prestigious professional
cycling teams have joined the roster for the upcoming
seventh annual Cox Charities Cycling Classic. More than
400 elite racers will compete in the amateur and professional
races to be held in Providence on Saturday, June 28.
Making its debut on USA Cycling’s National Racing
Calendar this year, the Cox Charities Cycling Classic
will attract nearly 150 of the top professional cyclists
in the world.
In addition to the Toyota-United Pro Cycling Team and
Team Type 1 previously announced, the following teams
are among those competing in the 50-lap event this Saturday:
- The Rite Aid Pro Cycling Team will
bring Bobby Lea (Topton, Pa.), who is headed to Beijing
in August as a member of the U.S. Olympic Team.
- Members of the Colavita/Sutter Home Cycling
Team are set to participate, including last
year’s Cox Charities Cycling Classic Pro/Am
champion Alejandro Borrajo (Viedma, Argentina). Joining
Borrajo for Colavita/Sutter Home is Davide Frattini
(Varese, Italy), who finished fifth in last year’s
Cox race and sixth in the 2006 event. In 2001, he
won the Giro D’Italia (Tour of Italy) for elite
pros under the age of 26. Sebastian Haedo (Chascomus,
Argentina) will also represent Colavita/Sutter Home
at the Cox race. The younger brother of J.J. Haedo,
one of the world’s best sprinters, Sebastian
recently won the prestigious Tour of Somerville NRC
event.
- Team Fuji will also bring Cox Charities
Cycling Classic veterans to this year’s race.
Mark McCormack (Foxboro, Mass.), winner of the 2006
Cox race and former U.S. National Road champion, will
join his brother, Frank McCormack (Leicester, Mass.),
who won the Cox race in 2005.
- Jonathan Hamblen (Winston-Salem, N.C.) of TIME
Pro Cycling, winner of the 2004 Cox Charities
Cycling Classic, will try to win the race again this
year.
- Representing the Healthnet-Maxxis Team
is the current and five-time U.S. National Cyclocross
champion, Tim Johnson (Beverly, Mass.). Johnson ranks
among the top 25 cyclocross racers in the world.
- Native New Englander Justin Spinelli (Nashua, N.H.),
representing Kelly Benefit Strategies/Medifast
Pro Cycling, is set to compete this year.
Spinelli was the youngest rider to compete in the
2000 Giro d’Italia, the second-largest race
in the world behind the Tour de France.
